History

The thesis of A. E. Fragos (CEO of ODOS SOFTWARE Ltd.) in the department of Rural & Surveying Engineering, NTUA, submitted in 1987 under the guidance of professor V. Psarianos, is the ancestor of ODOS software. The object of his thesis was the design of an integrated computer aided highway design system and the development of an intelligent cross-section design software.

The first commercial edition of ODOS (ODOS 1), including cross-section design and earthworks calculations was initially released in 1987.

In 1988, a vertical alignment module was added to ODOS (ODOS 2).

In 1989, additional horizontal alignment, superelevation rates and pavement widening design modules were incorporated into ODOS software, forming the third edition (ODOS 3) as a complete highway design software covering all the major aspects of highway design.

In 1991, ODOS was chosen as the standard road design software of MEPPPW (Ministry for Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works), DMEO (Directorate of Road Works Studies).

In 1992 (ODOS 4), Template Subassembly design module and complex cross-sections of non-parallel roads were added to the software. During the same year, ODOS adopted the automatic design drawings production in AutoCAD environment (with which it is still compatible).

In 1993, the first edition of ODOS CONSTRUCTION, the as-built cross-sections module, was released.

In 1994, ODOS (in the framework of a consultancy contract of ODOS SOFTWARE with MEPPPW for "electronic" motorway design checking) was widely used for checking, review and realignment of problematic sections of Egnatia Motorway and PATHE (Patra - Athens - Thessaloniki - Evzoni) Motorway.

In 1995, ODOS 5 was released in a new structure with a new user interface and new alignment design and typical cross-section design properties. In the framework of the contract awarded to the company in 1994, ODOS 5 was used as the basis for the HDSDF (Highway Design Submission Digital Format) specifications, approved by DMEO/b/O/60/03-23-95 according to Deputy ministerial decision (MEPPPW).

ODOS Software Ltd. was first established as a private company in 1995.

ODOS CoGo, and ODOS TIN, (the digital terrain model software) were released in the Greek market in 1996. The same year, ODOS was chosen as the standard highway design software for the Public Works Services of Cyprus.

In 1997, ODOS (being the Consultant of EGNATIA ODOS S.A. according to a call up contract) was used in urgent, rapid realignment of problematic sections of the Egnatia Motorway (Egnatia motorway, a modern closed motorway 680 kilometres long and 24.5 metres wide over the greatest part of its length following a new alignment and running across Epirus and Northern Greece from Igoumenitsa to Evros, the Egnatia Motorway is one of the largest road construction projects in Europe. Nine major vertical axes connect the motorway with Albania , FYROM, Bulgaria and Turkey. 99 km of tunnels, 80 km of bridges and 50 interchanges carry it across the Greek countryside. EGNATIA ODOS S.A. a Greek state company, operating by private sector economic and financial criteria, under the superintendence of the MEPPPW, was created as a product of discussions between the European Community and the Greek Government to advance the implementation of the the project within the 2nd Community Support Framework).

The same year, ODOS SOFTWARE was awarded a contract with MEPPPW, for supplying several MEPPPW Services (DMEO, EYDE MEDE Special Public Works Service for Western Greece Motorway, PYDE Regional Service of Public Works of Thessaloniki etc.) with ODOS software. Furthermore, ODOS SOFTWARE was also awarded a contract with EYDE PATHE to supply its service with ODOS software. With this contract ODOS was made the standard highway design software for PATHE Motorway projects.

In 1998, ODOS was chosen by J/V ATTIKI ODOS S.A. as the standard software to be used by the J/V construction companies for the design of Stavros - Spata freeway project (Athens ~63km long external ring road, 32 interchanges - the biggest privately financed motorway project ever in Greece). The same year, EGNATIA ODOS S.A. selected ODOS for the supervising and checking of its highway design projects.

In 2000, ODOS 6 was first released in the Greek market as a Windows 95/98/NT/2000 application. This edition adopted exclusively a unique interactive 3d design concept (simultaneous viewing, editing and real-time interaction in plan, profile and cross-section) for the design of road or corridor projects. The new Greek OMOE design standards (Guidelines for the Design of Highway Facilities) were completely incorporated in ODOS 6.

The same year a new partner, Nikos Karapanagou, Electrical and Computer Science Engineer has joined ODOS SOFTWARE. Nikos Karapanagou is the Product Development Director of the company.

In 2001, ODOS Emos was released as the new company product for the modeling of air pollution, traffic noise and visual intrusion to be used in environmental impact studies.

In 2004, ODOS 7, the latest version of the road design software was released in the greek market. ODOS 7 expands ODOS 6's corridor design capabilities to the fully automated design of at-grade intersections according to german RAL-K-1 standards. ODOS 7 is completely autonomous in the sector of design drawings production. Incorporating the OpenDWG technology can produce all the design drawings within its own environment and not necessarily in AutoCAD, as it did at its former versions. With the same technology, ODOS 7 can also read any DWG format files, and automatically create TIN DTM ground models, using any 3d information included in the DWG files.

The same year ODOS SOFTWARE, as a sub contractor of ALTEC S.A. was awarded a contract for the supply of the Technical Services of all the Greek State Prefectures with 30 ODOS 7 and ODOS CONSTRUCTION software systems (Call for bids No. 13588/25-4-2001, Ministry of Interior, Integrated IT system for the Prefectures).
